OUT of Stock.  Top Deck double deckers offered a revolutionary form of long-distance transport from the 70s- 90s. The large British Lodekkas carried under-35s vast distances through Europe, South East Asia, the Middle East and Australia in a new kind of no frills adventure tourism. As a novice driver with Top Deck, Trevor drove the double decker bus, Knackers around Europe from early 1977. A year later he was set loose on his first overland tour, London to Kathmandu and return driving the bus, Grunt. A three-week dash to Kathmandu had them stumble into the start of the civil war in Afghanistan. In the centre of a government crackdown with soldiers and tanks on the roads. Trevor describes his exciting and sometimes harrowing experiences on six overland trips as both driver and courier. His final trip in 1980 was the massive 20-week Sydney to London tour with its third and final leg aboard ‘Casper’. Casper’s carried its 20 occupants across India, Pakistan, Iran, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Turkey, Greece, Yugoslavia, and Italy. They passed through 21 countries conquering places where the buses’ designers never meant it to go. Once in London those initial passengers had covered 34,000 kilometres, Trevor’s wife Hilde was one of those who started the trip in Sydney.

If you have ever done a Top Deck overland, or wish you had, then read this “ must – read book”. 1978 -1980 was a very volatile time in Asia, especially Afghanistan and Iran. Trevor captures the era well and comes through a multitude of dangerous situations unscathed. Just reading Trevor’s adventures will trigger your own journey down memory lane.
